Job Title: Building Aide

Building/Department: Hoppin Elementary School 

Reports to: Building Principal

 

Summary:

The Building Aide plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of students throughout the shift, including  recess and lunch periods. This position is responsible for maintaining a positive and inclusive environment, supervising student behavior, and enforcing school rules. The position also assists with cafeteria operations, ensuring a smooth lunch service and proper hygiene practices.

 

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred. 
  • Prior experience working with children in a school setting or childcare facility is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to set clear expectations and enforce rules in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Excellent patience and ability to remain calm in challenging situations.
  • Strong sense of responsibility and commitment to student safety.
  • Basic first-aid and CPR certification preferred.

 

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

(These duties and responsibilities are judged to be "essential functions" in terms of the Americans with Disabilities Act or ADA)

  • Assists and supervises students on the playground, cafeteria, and throughout the school environment, monitoring their activities and ensuring their safety.
  • Enforces school rules and expectations for behavior, intervening in conflicts and redirecting disruptive behavior.
  • Provides positive reinforcement and encouragement to students, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.
  • Assists with cafeteria operations, such as setting up and cleaning up lunch areas, monitoring food lines, and ensuring proper hygiene practices.
  • Responds to minor injuries and reports any accidents or safety hazards to appropriate personnel.
  • Ensure that there is a variety of play materials/equipment in working order and available for students to enjoy during recess periods, i.e., balls, jump ropes, colored chalk, etc.
  • Move around the playground to supervise students during play activities ensuring student safety and enjoyment.
  • Supervise indoor recess during inclement weather.
  • Maintain order while taking students to and from the playground.
  • Assist children with playground needs, (i.e., coats, hats, boots, bathroom needs, etc.)
  • Contributes to a positive and professional work environment.
  • Maintain a consistent and reliable on-site work schedule.
  • Throughout the building, assist with sweeping, shoveling sidewalks, vacuuming, spot cleaning, and trash removal as needed 
  • Move furniture and supplies as needed.
  • Report items in the district maintenance systems that need repair or further custodial service
  • Help with sickness related clean up as needed.
  • Assist in relocating furniture and supplies as required.
  • Assist with cleaning up sickness-related incidents when required.
  • Perform any additional duties as assigned

  • Language Skills:Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with students, staff, and parents/guardians in a professional manner. This may include giving instructions, providing feedback, and resolving conflicts.
  • Mathematical  Skills:Basic math skills are necessary for tasks such as maintaining inventory of supplies, measuring cleaning solutions, and following cleaning schedules.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to prioritize tasks, make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment, and solve problems independently. Ability to follow established procedures and adapt to changing situations.

 

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit; constantly  walk and stand and reach with hands and arms; frequently required to bend, kneel or squat; occasionally  lift and carry up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision; very good depth perception; and the ability to communicate through speech. The position requires a high amount of physical activity.

  • The ability to stand or walk for extended periods.
  • The ability to bend, stoop, and kneel to supervise students on the playground.
  • The ability to lift and carry light objects, such as cafeteria trays or playground equipment ( based on specific duties).

 

Work Environment:

This position requires working outdoors in all weather conditions, as well as indoors, including hot, cold, noisy, and crowded environments. The employee may also encounter fumes and odors on occasion.  Deadlines with severe time constraints are occasional.

Additional Information:

  • Hourly Wage: $12.00
  • Up to 180 days. Monday-Friday, 4 hours per day.  Shift start and end date set by the building principal. This position generally follows the TRCS Academic Calendar. This position has non-working days on half days, during winter, spring and summer breaks as well as designated holidays.
